What are the South African weather and sea conditions like?
South Africa covers the southern tip of the continent, with more than 1,600 miles of coastline stretching from Namibia on the west Atlantic coast, south around the tip of Africa, and north east to Mozambique on the Indian Ocean. It lies at roughly the same distance south of the equator as Britain does to the north, which makes it the perfect winter sailing destination, the ideal escape when we’re suffering from the winter chills way up here.
Where the South Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean meet, at the southern tip of the African continent, you get dramatic storms. The Indian Ocean to the east is warmed by the Mozambique current, also called the Agulhas, fresh from the tropics. The Atlantic, to the west, gets cooled down by the chilly Antarctic Benguela current. Add the winds and the unusual topography of the land mass and you get lush forests and subtropical savanna on the east coast, with dramatically contrasting desert landscapes on the west coast.
Things to do at the V&A waterfront
You could easily spend all your time at the Waterfront itself, it’s such a gorgeous place to be. You can take cruises on the lovely Langebaan Lagoon, sail False Bay and enjoy magical Clifton Beach. There are whale watching trips and shark dives. The Waterfront is also home to the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island, Nobel Square, Two Oceans Aquarium and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, where you’ll find the world’s biggest and most exciting collection of modern African art.
This remains the oldest working harbour in the southern hemisphere and the views of Table Mountain provide plenty of visual drama, including stunning ocean views and the spectacular Hottentots-Holland Mountains.
